University High School’s Science Team triumphed at the 33rd Regional Science Bowl competition, held this past Saturday at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. This marks the team’s sixth win in eight years, and their third consecutive trip to the finals—an impressive record given the high level of competition among not only public schools but also private schools in the region.
This annual U.S. Department of Energy competition, hosted by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, is traditionally a Jeopardy-style competition meant to test students’ science knowledge.
An Exciting Competition Match
In the double-elimination rounds, the team faced off against Troy High School for a third time in an incredibly intense and exciting match. The outcome came down to the final question, where Troy answered correctly, narrowing the score gap. Ultimately, the victory was decided by the outcome of the bonus question, with University High School’s team securing the win.
“These outstanding students showed determination, good sportsmanship and worked together, demonstrating the true spirit of a University High Trojan,” said Chair of Uni’s science department and coach David Knight. “Our students showed a depth of knowledge in each field of science. I am proud of how hard they worked and what they have accomplished.”
The Winning Team
This year’s team included:
- Sara Yu, Grade 12
- Angelina Yan, Grade 11
- Feodor Yevtushenko, Grade 11 - Team captain
- Timothy Chen, Grade 10
- Shloke Kamat, Grade 10
They competed against more than 20 other schools from the Southern California area and excelled at answering questions ranging on topics such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and space and earth sciences.
This team prepared for months, studying and working together. Uni will now advance to represent IUSD at the national competition in April.
Congratulations and good luck at the national competition!
