University High School’s Science Bowl team placed eighth in the nation, outperforming more than 60 high school teams from across the United States at the National Competition.

Hosted annually by the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Science Bowl is one of the nation’s premier academic competitions, testing students’ knowledge across physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, energy, and mathematics in a fast-paced buzzer format. Only regional champions advance to the national stage, making it one of the most competitive in the country.

This year’s tournament featured 68 teams with a rigorous format of round-robin play and a double-elimination championship bracket. University High School delivered an outstanding performance in both phases. In round-robin competition, Uni posted one of the strongest records in its division, finishing first with 16 total points and securing the top Division Team Challenge (DTC) ranking as a tiebreaker.

Advancing to the championship bracket, Uni won multiple elimination matches, including victories over Collierville High School and Carmel High School. The team ultimately competed in 12 total matches over the course of the national finals.

This year’s team included:

  • Feodor Yevtushenko, senior, team captain
  • Angelina Yan, senior
  • Timothy Chen, junior
  • Stephanie Yang, sophomore
  • Priya Kim-Ozaeta, sophomore

“This level of performance is a testament to the dedication of our students, the hard work they have put into preparing, and the excellent STEM instruction they have received at Uni,” said Chair of Uni’s science department and coach David Knight. “Competing at this level requires mastery across multiple scientific disciplines and mathematics, and our team represented UHS with great distinction.”

Join us in congratulating the University High School Science Bowl team on an incredible season and national performance!
