University High School is excited to announce the hiring of Chris Hernandez as our new Head Football Coach. Coach Hernandez comes to us from Santiago High School in Corona, where he has served as an Assistant Coach and as a Social Science Teacher. Previously, he has also coached at Corona High School and at Diamond Bar High School. He has been an assistant for 11 years, serving as a varsity Offensive Coordinator, a position coach (both on offense and on defense), and a lower-level head coach. Coach Hernandez brings an energy and enthusiasm that will connect well with the student athletes at UNI. His core values, knowledge, and experience make him a perfect fit for University High School. Santiago’s head football coach, Scott Morrison, says that Coach Hernandez is “as prepared as anyone to take on his first head coaching assignment.” He is a hard-worker and is extremely organized. UNI Athletic Director Tom Shrake says, “We are extremely excited to add Chris to our UNI family. I have no doubt he will do an exceptional job leading our football program and mentoring our student-athletes.” Chris Hernandez comes to UNI with a philosophy of building character and skill in athletes that will serve them on and off the field well after high school. University Principal, Kevin Astor, is “…confident that Coach Hernandez’ commitment to invest in the athletes developing great players and great citizens will combine with his football knowledge to create a superior program.” Coach Hernandez will immediately begin making preparations for the upcoming season, including coordinating with returning coaches and on-campus personnel to ensure that the program has a productive offseason. Coach Hernandez says "I'm blessed and humbled to have the opportunity to lead the young men in the UNI Football program. University High School is a special place, and administration has laid out a vision that I'm honored to be a part of. I'm excited to develop our players and establish a culture that the community and school can be proud of. This truly is a dream come true for my family and I." We are looking forward to a wonderful season under the direction of Coach Hernandez.
